Okinawa Praise Electric Scooter Review
The name Okinawa may appear Japanese, but Okinawa Scooters
is a 100 percent Indian electric two-wheeler production company, headquartered
in Gurugram, near Delhi. And the Okinawa Praise is the second electric scooter
from the company, introduced later last year. The Compliment is the flagship
electric scooter from Okinawa and boasts of several best-in-class features and
performance, including a range of around 170 - 200 kilometres on a single fee
of the battery, and a top speed of 75 kmph. We put in some time riding the
Okinawa Praise around Fresh Delhi, to see what this new electric kid scooter
offers.
TThe style
The Okinawa Praise definitely appears good, and the front
side apron with the vast strip of lights combining the LED headlight outfitted
by the LED day running lights call and make an immediate impression. It's a
long, full-sized scooter and is much longer than the 125 closed circuit Honda
Grazia and however, new TVS NTorq a hundred and twenty-five. The Praise looks
big, long and definitely has road presence, and we encountered several admiring
people who had a few of questions about charges, range etc.
The Okinawa Praise has a long set of features and has of
quality components
Seem closer, and the Compliment rewards you with their long
set of features, including the full-digital instrument gaming system, USB
charging port, cubbyholes to store a drinking water bottle or two, and disc
brakes on both front and rear rims. The front disc braking system employs two
combined disks, with the caliper grasping both smaller inner disk and a bigger
external disc. Front side wheel is suspended from a hydraulic telescopic fork
and the rear gets a set of dual tube shocks. The underseat storage space is
nineteen. 5 litres, enough really to store a few household goods, and the
charger (which by the way, takes up quite some space), but not enough to store
a complete face helmet.
In all, the Okinawa Praise certainly looks unique, and big,
and gets the qualities to make you take a second look, even if you're not
shopping for scooters, and the one at that!
TThe
performance
It's an electric, so there is noise, simply a calm electric hum
which is barely audible in traffic. Which may be the key to you boasting about
zero emissions and all, but India still has to heat up to the concept of
soundless two-wheelers. And, when will be certainly no noise, no audio, anyone
can jaywalk in front of you, even when they see you coming, and other
two-wheeler riders will make unexpected turns in front of you, so you must be
on the horn a lot, contemplating the other motorist, or pedestrian's next move.
It's a bummer, but is not a deal breaker. You in no time get used to the
soundless way the electric scoot goes.
Digital speedometer quickly gets to speed, thanks to the
Sport mode and the 'Turbo' button
The Reward is quick, quicker than any electric scooter we
now have ridden so far, and the digital speedometer quickly climbs the numbers.
You will discover two modes - Economic climate and Sport, with Overall economy
offering better range but less power. The Sport mode naturally offers faster
acceleration, up to about a speedo-indicated 60 kmph. On the left handlebar,
there's also a 'turbo' button, but don't be fooled into believing really
turbocharged, it just offers you a surge of more electric power which will see
the speedo reaching out from over 60 kmph to an indicated 74 kmph during our
test runs. Thus far, so good, and appears to be fast enough for the daily
commute or possibly a quick dash to suburbia. And a claimed selection of more
than 150 kilometers (actually 170-200 km said range) will leave you without the
worry of jogging out of charge.
The Okinawa Praise isn't actually as quick as seems
initially
But ride it for some time and when the morning traffic
starts picking up, 75 kmph on the Praise's speedo doesn't seem to be fast
enough; in fact, even 60 kmph on the speedo seems a great deal slower than it
is. A quick comparison with our support vehicle, and a peek into the
speedometers of a few of commuter motorcycles affirmed our doubts. The
speed-checking device on the Praise is, well, a little too optimistic, and is
off by more than 12 kmph from the genuine speed. Therefore, we mistrust if the
claimed seventy-five kmph max speed is actually achievable. In actuality, 60-62
kmph top velocity is more like the actual top speed.
A GPS speed test exposed the speedometer reading has a
more than twelve kmph error margin
In fact, whenever we tested the actual speed with a GPS
based app, our suspicions were confirmed and the actual speed was quite below
the suggested speed. The truth is though, 60-65 kmph excellent enough for a
city runaround, especially for an electric child scooter, therefore the Praise
is more rapidly than any other electric scooters, but it's not as fast as
really claimed to be.
TThe ride
As long as you're riding on soft roads, like almost all of
the roads during our test ride, the Praise offered a smooth ride, mainly. It's
only when you hit a few undulations on the highway, or some joint parts on a
flyover, the scooter jolts and cash, despite the flashy looking suspension at
both ends. Ride quality certainly leaves a lot to be desired, specially when
the heading gets rough. The Okinawa Praise's bouncy ride quality will make you
re-think if it's the ideal ride for our highway conditions, particularly when
the current crop of scooters with internal combustion motors have changed the
sport many times over in conditions of handling and performance. For the, it's
still acceptable, but for really change the game in the scooter segment
(electric or otherwise), the Compliment needs a better, more comfortable ride.
The Okinawa Praise has comfortable ride quality over soft
roads
The footboard is on the taller aspect, so the rider seems
cramped, since you have to bend your hip and legs a little too much. It's not
excruciatingly not comfortable, but definitely not a desirable riding position.
Controlling is neutral, and for most users, the Reward will not be much of a
disappointment in that department. But again, when comparing other scooters in
that same price bracket, the Okinawa Compliment doesn't 'wow' you with its
handling or supply you with the confidence to push the scooter around a part.
The MRF rubber is grippy enough, but the brakes need some fine tuning. Under
hard braking system, the rear locks up too quickly resulting in a slight skid
and the front lacks the nip or progression to drop speed.
The riding position is cramped and the high footboard
makes it not comfortable
T
TThe last
phrase
The Okinawa Praise is priced at? 65, 500 (ex-showroom) and
that makes it slightly more expensive than several new and popular internal
combustion engine (ICE) scooters like the Honda Grazia, TVS NTorq 125 and even
the Suzuki Access 125. Of course, the largest USP of the Praise is that it's
electric - so running costs will be far less than a conventional ICE scooter,
and it's spending green with zero emissions. If those are qualities you would
like in your choice of tires, the Okinawa Praise certainly deserves a close
look and consideration.
Despite the shortcomings, the Okinawa Compliment still
offers very good value as a skilled electric scooter
Our test ride involved riding the scooter for more than 80
km in and around the city, and the battery level signal still showed
three-fourths of charge left, so we guess, the Praise will easily offer more
than 100km of range on a single charge. Recharging time still completes in
about 7-8 hours, but an optional quick power adaptor (costing around? 3, 000)
may reduce that amount of time to two hours to fully fee the Praise for use.
It's still one of the better electric scooters on sale in India right now,
nevertheless the game is going to change soon with bigger players with over 20
or so years of manufacturing experience and expertise entering the electric
scooter space. Right up until that happens, in a given time or two, the Okinawa
Praise is now among the finest electric scooters you can buy, despite its
shortcomings.
